Hospital Birth Photography in 2021: What is possible?

We are all tired of Covid. Just like every other aspect of our lives, the world of Birth has been greatly impacted too. Some of you may even have postponed even thinking about having a baby, hoping that this would pass quickly. Now, more than a year later, it is still going on.

We have already come a long way from the time when Birth Photographers were not allowed to enter a hospital’s reception area (never mind the theatre or delivery room!). Even in those trying situations, I’m grateful that it pushed my creativity to new limits: I was able to overcome the challenges that Covid put before me as a Birth Photographer, and was still able to relay full, beautiful birth stories.

But now…

I want to show you what is possible.

I want to show you that Covid doesn’t have to have the last word.

Doors are literally opening up! You can still have your birth documented the way you always wanted.

Many of the hospitals I work with around Cape Town have revisited their Covid protocols, and combined with with the South African Birth Photographers Association’s updated PPE Protocol we are grateful to have regained regular access to both maternity wards and theatres.

Life brand new is still important! Life is still continuing! And the memories made on the day of your child’s birth are irreplaceable and worth capturing.

Stay informed about hospitals and having your birth photographer present at your big day.

Here are two of my most recent hospital births, both documented during the time of the pandemic:

Natural hospital birth at Christiaan Barnard | Nala
Beautiful elective c-section at Life Vincent Pallotti
